The New Zealand Fur Seals are closely related to the much larger Hooker's Sea Lion. The New Zealand Fur Seal has several features in common with sea lions such as an external ear flap and limbs they can walk on.

New Zealand Fur Seals and Hooker's Sea Lions not only differ in size but their hind flippers are also different. Fur Seal's have hind limbs that are fused together, while Sea Lions are able to move them independently. Many languages, other than English, describe Fur Seals as 'Sea Dogs'- a fitting name.
