Black Swans were introduced to New Zealand in the 1860s from Australia. They form breeding pairs that last for life and should a swan lose its partner it may take years to recover. These birds feed in shallow water and use their necks to reach the bottom where they find aquatic plants. They may sometimes graze on land like geese.
